Unoriginality Stamp by AmethystKirby Unoriginality Stamp by AmethystKirby
The sweet irony is that I vividly remember seeing a stamp like this before, but hell if I'm gonna find the damn thing again *shakes fist at search bar*

I think we all know what this is trying to poke fun at. People who just. Don't. Try.

For example, how many people have you seen with OCs that are cats, dogs, dragons, wolves, or foxes? And how many people have you seen with OCs that are slugs, moths, marmosets, or wombats? Not nearly as many as our dear kitties and foxies.

I mean, there are countless different species of animals out there. Even a chinchilla would be way more original than a fox or a wolf or a cat. And if you absolutely must use an overused animal, can't you atleast try to use a rarer breed of these animals? Like, if you want a cat OC, why not make a Havana Brown, Scottish Fold, or American Curl? They're unusual, they're cute, and they're more interesting than, say, a fluffy white Persian or a Himalayan or a Calico.

When making characters, be they animal, human, alien, demon, or whatever you want, try to make them stand out somehow. We've seen a million cats and wolves and we've seen enough smokin' hot girls who are part demon/vampire/werewolf and can sprout wings and turn into dragons/wolves/black cats anytime they want, so try something to really make people go "Wow, I wish I thought of that!" or "Holy crap, I've never even heard of that species/breed before!" or "Dude, there's actually a sub-type of vampire that does sparkle but looks gross?!"

(And don't even get me started on people who insert their "original characters" into an already well-established world, like say the worlds of popular video games and anime or books and movies. That's just not even bothering to make your story or character good if you have to have someone else do all the work for you.)

I recommend hunting around for myths and legends and creatures from other lands, something you've never heard of before. And with the proper inspiration, even if it isn't completely original, you can atleast try to make something that few, if many at all, people have ever heard or even thought of. It'll be way better than another Sonic recolor, Pokemon, wolf, sexy vampire, or Harry Potter ripoff.

(This stamp could really apply to anything, especially crazy fandoms, but it's original intent was to stare in the direction of animal OCs like cats and foxes, which you see everywhere, and often in... less than child-friendly situations. So feel free to use it to express your feelings to anything that you think is overrated, overdone, or just not even cool anymore because it's been used and abused to the point of nobody even remembering its original message or intent.)

Yes, I know people are usually just having fun and are trying to show their love for a series or a species, but if you want to be taken seriously and want to get attention that you deserve, don't fall-back on fancharacters and a pre-existing series or animals that are as cheap and common as humans themselves. If you want to be a real artist, take the plunge and do your own thing. You'll feel a lot better and appreciate it more if it's all created by your own hands.

It's kind of a good excuse (depends). Not everyone wants to be "original". What if I want my character to be a cat? It's still unique if I express it by my own personality and such.
If that's my dream, then I will go for that way instead of trying something that I don't intend to do. It's also not a flaw, I mean who decides that? The Cult of Originality?

I mean people are allowed to have similar styles. Especially the humans.
The idea of being more unknown is just personal opinion. I don't want to be that unknown, I just want to use a feel that I'm familiar with and make new things out of it.

I can get recolors and people claiming "Im so originalsz!"
That's laughable to me. Haha
I was mainly talking about the right to re-create similar things and possibly doing new things with them.

I tried making a fursona at one point so I could use it as a profile pic, but I'm bad with animals, so I just stuck with my mindless scribbles. Does that mean I don't try, or I don't try hard enough? Probably the latter.

I love searching the internet for myths and tales regarding something that could be implied to my stories, so naturally, I agree with this stamp and your description. Countless times I have seen OC's that were half-a**ed. Using story lines, and plots that were used many times before.

But regarding OC designs... The cat, fox, wolf, trend thing has just gotten annoying.
I understand the people who have a difficult time drawing humans and stick to drawing animals. That's fine, I totally understand that. I have a difficult time drawing humans as well. But if you must, please, PLEASE make your characters interesting to your followers, and not just some  personal anthro/animal fantasy you concocted. I have seen that too many times before.

I rarely ever see Persian OCs, or for that matter, feline OCs with any specific breed. They're all boring clusterfuck "mutt" cats.

Oh yes, I am. I have a cat , an anthro cat, and a human with cat features.
Oh dear...
And I feel it would be rude to change two of them since I adopted them...
The anthro, however... I need to do some research. I'm thinking a Hamster, I'm not sure.

I have a cat OC.
Just because I've learnt to draw cats better than anything else xD
But I SWEAR I will DIE if I see any more purple cats with blue and Rainbow eyes labelled as realistic cats.

Even characters/species that are in anime, books, movies, tv shows, and video games aren't original either.

I mean seriously how many times has you seen vampire characters in popular media like Twilight, Monster High, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, UnderWorld, Hotel Transylvania, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, Trinity Blood, Rosario + Vampire, Vampire Knight, Scooby Doo and etc? A LOT BECAUSE THEY ARE OVERUSED!!! The author or writer for these tv shows and films didn't create the vampire species. So what better way to create vampires by referring to Bram Stockers Dracula. Besides vampires aren't new and the myths about them existed even before Bram Stocker wrote Dracula.
LadyData Featured By Owner Jul 6, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
The proper term for "OCs" that are placed in an established world in anime, books, video games, movies, and tv are called fan characters.
Renee-Niels Featured By Owner Jun 30, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
... And again, proof of this: your idea of sparkling vampires that are still hideously ugly was a really clever idea! And that got me thinking: what if the sparkling was something that distracted their prey and kept them docile?

You just proved yourself right!
PHDScienceFan Featured By Owner May 24, 2013
From what I have seen nothing is original but nothing is entirely a rip off. OC's and media, movies, etc have influence from something done before and people just like to spice it up a bit or a just about as enough to stand out earning the label "original" which is just a pointless concept to me.

I don't even use animal OCs. I do use fan characters but I also have the sense to exercise my originality more by making up my own stories.

Good points.

I tried to avoid as many cliches as possible when making my Sonic OC.

he is actually a porcupine instead of a hedgehog.

His quills and the Eggman symbols on his shoes, and his dark color make him stick out.

He is on Eggman's side (because there are too many good-guy OCs).

His powers are mild and only can be acsessed in his super form (unlike most OCs who have a sorts of crazy powers and can use them whenever they want).

He has a first and last name (first name, Funnel. last name, Flaky).

He is orphaned (read further before you call it cliche) because his parents died in a tornado (they died in a natural disaster instead of being killed by Eggman). He was actually RAISED by Eggman after that.

I also was being realistic when writing his bio.

It's a nice try, but I know you can do even better if you've come this far c: I read everything in your deviation.

It makes me so happy to know that there are still people out there who try, not like those lazybones who change one thing about Sonic or Tails, give it a typical name, and try to pass it off as a complete character with no real personality. I've seen several "original characters" that were literally just female Tails, and nothing else. Oh, except maybe something like the real Tails is their twin, or their boyfriend... or both. How boring and uncreative can a person get, eh?

I have a few nitpicks, but I won't bother you with them, unless you want me to c:

I see you've just gotten into this fandom? I just got into Homestuck myself! As much as I find myself adoring it and even a lot of the fandom, the crushing self-disappointment still weighs heavy on me. I'm not even joking. I promised myself years ago to NEVER get caught-up in the hype of a big fandom, and yet here we are.

At the very least, I'm using my love of Homestuck as a platform to start my own thing completely. Same kind of comic/game style, but my own world and characters altogether. I think it's the best way to honor something I love without diving into fancharacters and such ^^ I see you have the imagination for it, you should try it yourself c: I wouldn't mind helping either, I like designing characters.

im extremely afraid of being mixed up in cliche, or doing weeaboo stuff, soo i try not to pick the easiest thing to resort to, trying to create something i do like, something that is me but something that is not overly used no matter. why not give it a try, even if it has already been made, why not try to make it better?.

I agree about the OC's, I've been making some OC bats (but my scanner keeps messing up the pictures) Because not a lot of people seem to have OC bats. I really don't think many people would make an OC slug.........

I'm writing my own story, it actually seems like something that will float. But sense it starts in a desert I made the 2 main characters middle eastern. The woman wears a white robe with a big hood. She's not muslim, she's an empress/queen and not a force to be requined with.
You`re right. At least we must try to come up with new things. In general you will never know unless you try.

...and the term is FC when the character is in a universe that someone else created...

When I saw this stamp, I thought of JC's Avatar. I mean, really. It's just Pocahontas with smurf-kitties but without the cool musical numbers. I know that you meant for this stamp to apply to all of the cliche OCs, but this stamp also seems to apply to popular culture as well. But that's just me.

Anyway, I can't believe that I've been a dA member for almost a year now and I've never seen this stamp! It speaks the truth! I think a lot of fanfiction writers need to see this.

THIS. I love you for this. Not because of the stamp so much, but in your info of about using different species of animals.
I, too, get annoyed when seeing the same animals used over and over again, blended in with being Human. That's why I love trying out the lesser known animals, insects or invertabrate animals. Not only will you learn something knew, but be a tad bit more original than most people.

Another thing that ticks me off with people using hybrids of animals or deamons or whatever with humans, is the anatomy. Sure, I understand if some things are impossible to have, you either gotta choose realistic or fantasy; but you could at least try and creat the skeleton, figure out the muscles and nervous system!

Ughh. Sorry. End of rant. ^^;

Thank you! Thank you for stating this!

Although, I understand if you might be against the fancharacter thing, I could be reading it wrong. Sorry if I seem like a total hypocrite, but I've just gone through this when trying to help out a friend. I don't believe that much in originality, it can still be there. But, I don't like it how people use it as an excuse to not try at all. And people even pat you on the back for not trying, what the fuck is this, I don't even. :iconwthplz:

Thank you for this stamp again.

I'm so sick and tired of seeing bland fursonas and so called "original characters". I like what you said about at least making the characters a rarer breed of animal.

My fursona is almost a kangaroo (with modifications of course). I haven't seen another kangaroo fursona yet. ;n;
